Why Choosing AVEENO® Baby Was My Natural Choice Mommy Outside The Box This post is brought to you by AVEENO® Baby and The Co. Why Choosing AVEENO® Baby Was My Natural Choice My mother loves to tell the story about how, when I was a baby, I could get a sunburn in the time it took to go from the house to the car. I think there is a good chance she is exaggerating a bit with that story. However, being a red headed, fair skinned baby I did burn quite easily. There were a few sun protection products available back in the 70s but sunscreen certainly wasn’t on the shelves of every store like it is today and it wasn’t nearly as effective as the sunscreens available today. And, not only was I extremely fair skinned, I also was blessed with sensitive skin (even eczema as a baby). There were absolutely no products made especially for me. In those days my mother’s best bet to keep me safe from the sun was to keep me covered up. Fast forward a few decades and things have sure changed. First of all, we are much more aware of the long term damage the sun can cause then we were when I was a kid. Back then it was more about avoiding painful burns. Today, well of course we want to also keep our kids from painful sunburns but we also know that even without a burn the sun can cause damage. Thankfully sunscreen has come a long way over the years. It’s more effective. It’s available with a higher SPF. Some of it is water resistant. And a few products are actually made with baby’s and children’s delicate skin in mind. When I became a mom to my own fair and delicate skinned baby I was really grateful that I had more options than just stay inside or cover her from head to toe to keep her skin protected and healthy in the summer. We have always been an “outdoorsy” active family, spending summers at the lake, camping, fishing and just being outside so sun protection has been really important for us. How do you get outside and keep your little ones safe from the sun? Babies under 6 months need to be kept out of direct sunlight. Newborns have very little melanin, the pigment that provides a little bit of natural sun defence. Babies this young also can also overheat and/or get dehydrated very quickly. Obviously nobody wants to be cooped up all summer long and you don’t have to. Use a stroller with a sun shade, sit in the shade of an umbrella or trees. Plan your baby outings for early morning or evening. Once your little one hits 6 months they can handle a bit more sun but you still need to be diligent with protecting them. Keep direct sun exposure to a minimum (especially until they are a year old). Get them into the habit of wearing hats and sunglasses early on (it’s important to protect those eyes too). Luckily at this age you can start to use sunscreen on babies. How do you know what sunscreen to use? For me that choice is easy. I have been using AVEENO® sunscreen products on myself for years. Although I eventually outgrew the eczema I had as a baby, I still have very sensitive skin. AVEENO® was always just the natural choice for me when it came to sun protection. So it was also the natural choice to use on my own baby. AVEENO® Baby Sensitive Skin Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 is extremely mild on baby’s sensitive skin while still maintaining broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. It also contains ACTIVE NATURALS® colloidal oatmeal. If you’ve ever had eczema or even just very sensitive skin you probably know how awesome colloidal oatmeal can be at soothing dry and irritated skin and maintaining moisture for dry skin. What’s more, it’s a mineral sunscreen that uses 100% naturally sourced active ingredients, making it a more natural choice. It’s also fragrance free which in our family is a must. When it comes to products for our babies and kids there are so many choices it can be hard to figure out which is the best. I’ve used AVEENO® products (not just sun care products) for myself for years. Moreover, AVEENO® is the #1 pediatrician recommended baby brand so I feel as though it’s a very trusted brand and is also highly recommended by a lot of moms (including this one). And that speaks volumes too. Moms always want the best for their baby’s. So this summer grab a bottle of AVEENO® Baby Sensitive Skin Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 (which is also available in a convenient stick for easy application on baby’s face) and enjoy a little sun knowing that not only is your little one protected but you are being gentle to their sensitive skin needs.
