HOW TO FEEL YOUR BEST THIS SPRING #MYCONFIDENCECHECKLIST A Piece of Elise I don’t know about you guys, but spring tends to be a tough time of year for my self-confidence. You’d think that it would be the opposite with all the sunshine and happy vibes, but after months of layering up in winter jackets and applying makeup that would only be appropriate in sub-zero temperatures, I actually get a bit anxious at the thought of wearing little sun dresses and not doing my hair. Don’t get me wrong, I very quickly get over it and fall head on into summer styling, but there is still an uncomfortable few weeks where I struggle to shed those layers that I’ve grown accustomed to in the winter. Case in point: I literally can’t remember the last time someone saw my knees. With all this in mind, it was perfect timing when the Ontario Dental Association asked to partner on a blog post highlighting what I do to feel confident in celebration of April’s Oral Health Month. Not to mention the fact that I am obsessed with my oral hygiene, but more on that later. While the days get warmer and my trip to Greece (!!!) gets closer, I’m beginning to feel those spring style jitters, as I see people out and about without their puffy winter parkas. For this reason, I’m going into full-on “confidence boosting mode” to ensure that I’m ready for summer. The following ten tips make up #MyConfidenceChecklist to get me ready for summer. Get Moving: After months of straight up hibernation or getting around in an Uber, it’s time to get walking again. Being active is one of the best ways to improve your mood and get those endorphins going which will quite literally boost your confidence. My motto is: if I you can walk there in an hour then do it. Practice Mindfulness: Reducing anxiety through calming the mind will help get rid of those unwarranted worries, which may impact your self-confidence. For me personally, anxiety is responsible for the aspects of self that I am most critical about. For this reason, mindfulness meditation practice is a very important component to my self-confidence. A Healthy Smile: My parents ensured that I went to the dentist for a checkup every six months as I was growing up. I also began using an electric toothbrush in grade school giving me a solid foundation in oral health. As I grew older, I realized that their frequent reminders to go and get my teeth checked stemmed from the fact that their generation didn’t have the same systems in place as youth to ensure that their teeth were healthy. Sorry to call you out on social media mum and dad, but both my parents are desperately trying to salvage their teeth right now through implants and other things that I know nothing about. They have some kind of appointment every few weeks and it’s costing them thousands of dollars. In addition to a spending a bit of time and money now to help ensure a healthy smile later; there is also the simple aspect of self-care that is key to my confidence. By taking a few hours out of my day to get my teeth checked, there is the physical confidence boost of having pearly whites, but I also experience an internal assurance from taking care of my body. For this reason, I recommend you to book an appointment with your dentist today or find one in your area. You’ll thank me when you’re sixty! Pedicure: Summer means sandal season and after months of a wearing winter boots, some cute polish gets me ready to break out my toes. Water: I’m obsessed with drinking water. I think it stemmed from the years in humid Bangkok, but I don’t feel right if I haven’t had several liters a day. Not only does it make me feel better, it quite literally improves the appearance of my skin. Nothing like a little spring glow to help get ready for summer! Sleep: I lose my mind if I don’t get eight hours sleep. When I’m tired, I struggle to feel good about myself, so getting the rest I need is top priority. Skincare: Summer is a time for no makeup, so I love to focus on skincare to ensure that I feel confident with a fresh face. Foods: I’m not really one for cooking or eating vegetables, but getting proper nutrients is important when it comes to feeling good. For this reason, I love drinking green juices because I can get a daily dose of greens from one little bottle. Be sure to look for juices that are made with mostly vegetables though! Hair Colour: Although I’ve gone blue at the moment, I’m usually a blonde and one of my biggest complexes is brassy hair. If my strands are more yellow than ash, I won’t even want to leave my house. For this reason, having toned hair is important for my self-confidence. I know this sounds stupid, but it’s a thing! Comfortable Clothing: Regardless of what I’m wearing, I don’t feel confident if I don’t feel comfortable. I can very rarely decide what I’m going to wear the day before because my style is so mood dependent. For me to feel confident, my outfit needs to stay true to how I’m feeling that day.
