Stop putting off your health care appointments. They’re an act of self-care! Styling the Inside Brought to you by Pearle Vision Self-care is a buzzword right now. Countless articles and Instagram posts I’ve seen circulating the internet in the New Year have talked about the importance of self-care. The thing is, I keep seeing photos of women having bubble baths with wine, or getting their nails done. I get it. These things are great ways to spend some time with yourself. I love having my nails done and it does feel nice to spend some time grooming myself. But the thing I rarely see people talking about when it comes to self-care is the importance of making much- needed health appointments. I’m so guilty of this too! In the back of my mind I know I should make myself a dentist appointment or put on my calendar the next time I should go for a blood test for my thyroid. But I don’t. I get busy with mommy duties, and work, and catering to everyone else. And then the worry of knowing it needs to be done begins to fester internally. I’m really good at making appointments for my daughters. In fact, they have upcoming eye exams and dentist appointments. Needless to say, making my health appointments a priority is an act of self-care. I know it isn’t as fabulous as getting a massage or a facial but getting these appointments out of the way, actually decreases stress. For this reason, I made the appointments I’ve been putting off beginning with an eye examination and a fitting for glasses at Pearle Vision located in the Coquitlam Centre. During my eye examination*, the optometrist informed me that I have pinguecula (pin-GWEK-yoo-lah) – a yellowish, slightly raised thickening of the conjunctiva on the white part of the eye close to the edge of the cornea. To decrease the risk of pinguecula, she informed me it’s important to wear sunglasses outdoors even on overcast and cloudy days because the sun’s UV rays penetrate cloud cover. For the best protection, she told me to choose sunglasses with a wraparound frame design, which block more sunlight than regular frames. Additionally, I was informed that my eyesight isn’t the same since my last exam two years ago. My left eye is weaker than my right. For this reason, I received a new prescription. When I asked about other options, I was informed that I’m not the best candidate for contact lenses because my eyes are on the drier side, which the optometrist believes is due to having an autoimmune disease. Furthermore, when I asked about laser eye surgery she said I wasn’t a candidate for this either but perhaps maybe in a few years. The examination portion of my visit was super informative and I’m so glad I finally made the much-needed eye examination appointment. Boring self-care wasn’t as boring as I thought it would be! No, I didn’t leave the appointment with beautifully painted fingernails, or a relaxing blissful feeling like I do when I leave the spa. I did, however, leave with my very first pair of prescription sunglasses! Seeing as I will be needing to wear sunglasses every day, I was happy about that. I also ordered some very stylish statement eyeglasses that I can’t wait to wear. Pearle Vision offers a wide variety of stylish frames with great brands. I chose a pair of cat eye Prada frames and because Pearle Vision has a great offer at the moment of 40% off your second complete pair, I also ordered a pair of prescription Ray-Bans. The eye care experts at Pearle Vision were very friendly, informative, and immensely helpful. After telling them what type of frame style I was looking for they made sure I had more than a few options to choose from. In addition, they were very happy to inform me they could direct bill our insurance company. This also made me so happy because it made ordering the glasses so simple! When I picked up my new frames, the staff at Pearle Vision were great with my youngest daughter. One of the eye care experts showed her the selection of kid frames. My daughter loved trying them on. She was making funny poses in the mirror and the staff who was attending to me while I was trying on my new frames (to ensure the fit and lense prescription felt comfortable) kept on giggling at how cute she was. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my eye care consultation and fitting with Pearle Vision. And remember, self-care isn’t always what we see on our Instagram feeds of beautifully curated photos of bubble baths. Although that is nice, it’s also imperative to make our health appointments a priority. I’m so relieved I’m aware of an eye condition I didn’t know I had. Although I wish I didn’t have it, I’m grateful I can now take preventive measures to make sure it doesn’t get worse. Cheers to boring self-care! *Eye exams were arranged. Thank you to Pearle Vision for sponsoring this post. If you’re in need of an eye exam I highly recommend visiting the team at Pearle Vision.
